Why Are There So Many Wasps in August?

If it feels like wasps are suddenly everywhere in late summer, you’re likely not imagining it. August is one of the busiest times of year for wasp activity in the Midwest. You may notice them hovering around the patio, garbage can, flower bed, garage, or outdoor activities. They seem to be a nuisance.

So, why are wasps so noticeable right now?

Wasp Colonies Are at Their Largest

Many wasp colonies begin small in the spring, but as the queen starts her nest, lays eggs, and raises the first generation of workers, those workers continue expanding the nest and growing the colony.

By late summer, the nest that started with just a few wasps may contain hundreds or even thousands, depending on the species. Simply put: there are a lot more wasps flying around now than there were earlier in the season.

They’re Looking for Food

This time of year also changes what wasps are looking for. Earlier in the season, many wasps are hunting insects to feed developing larvae. But as the colony reaches the end of its seasonal cycle, wasps become more interested in easy sources of sugar and carbohydrates.

This can bring them into closer contact with people and our sweetly scented hot spots. Pop cans, fruit, garbage, outdoor meals and more can quickly attract unwanted attention.

Watch Where They’re Coming and Going

Seeing an occasional wasp in your yard isn't necessarily cause for concern. But if you notice several wasps repeatedly flying in and out of the same location, there may be a nest nearby.

Common nesting areas include:

• Under decks and railings

• Inside sheds or garages

• Under roof eaves

• Around doorways and entryways

• In wall voids

• In trees or shrubs

• In holes or underground burrows

Take extra caution when nests near play areas, patios, entrances, sidewalks or other high-traffic areas.

When a wasp nest is close to where your family spends time, resist the temptation to knock it down, spray it with a hose or disturb it. Wasps may aggressively defend their nest when they feel threatened, and multiple stings can be especially dangerous for anyone with a known allergy.

Keep children and pets away from the area and consider getting professional help, particularly if you aren't sure what type of wasp you're dealing with or where the nest is located.
